Pergola Walk

The Pergola Walk flanks the 350-foot Centennial Green in the McGovern Centennial Gardens with a variety of colorful blooms.

1. Monch Aster (Aster x frikartii ‘Monch’)


This deciduous perennial blooms from spring to summer with blue flowers. This plant is native to southwestern Asia and attracts butterflies. Monch Asters thrive in most soil conditions as long as they are regularly watered. There are approximately 200 Monch Asters in the garden.

Light: Partial shade - full sun

Size: 2 - 3’ tall; 2 - 3’ wide

Water: Dry - moist

Special cultural requirements: Cut stems to the ground in early spring before new growth appears. 
 

2. Orange Stalked Bulbine (Bulbine frutescens ‘Hallmark’) 

This evergreen perennial comes from South Africa and has orange flowers that bloom from spring to summer, attracting hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies.

Light: Full sun

Size: 1 - 2’ tall; 3 - 5’ wide

Water: Moist

Special cultural requirements: Remove spent flower heads to encourage fall re-bloom.
 

3. Shasta Daisy (Chrysanthemum x superbum ‘Becky’)

This herbaceous perennial blooms from summer to fall bearing white flowers and attracts butterflies. It is also known as Ox-Eye Daisy.

Light: Full sun

Size: 3 - 4’ tall; 1 - 2’ wide

Water: Moderate - wet

Special cultural requirements: Divide clumps every 2 - 3 years.
 

4. Bela Lugosi Day Lily (Hemerocallis ‘Bela Lugosi’)

The Bela Lugosi Day Lily originates from Holland and has pink petals with a lime green throat. This semi-evergreen perennial blooms in midsummer and attracts butterflies and hummingbirds.

Light: Full sun - partial shade

Size: 29 - 33’’ tall; 18 - 23’’ wide

Water: Moist - moderate

Special cultural requirements: Divide clumps every 3 - 4 years.
