MONDAY, MAY 18, 2009 – Hermann Park has expanded parking options for visitors by collaborating with the folks at Memorial Hermann Medical Plaza Garage to allow weekend parking for Park patrons for a flat rate of $6. The Memorial Hermann Medical Plaza building (pictured) is located at 6400 Fannin Street, on the south side of N. MacGregor Drive between Fannin and Main; entrances are accessible from both Fannin and Main. The additional parking will benefit those wishing to enjoy any of the many attractions found within Houston’s finest green space including: the pedal boats at McGovern Lake, Hermann Park Railroad, the beautiful landscaping at Lake Plaza, Jones Reflection Pool, the Japanese Garden, the playgrounds, Miller Outdoor Theatre, the Houston Zoo, the Houston Museum of Natural Science, and the Houston Garden Center. Hermann Park Conservancy, a nonprofit citizens’ organization dedicated to the stewardship and improvement of Hermann Park, in collaboration with the Houston Parks and Recreation Department, recently unveiled a number of significant enhancements to the Park, prompting a nationally known landscape designer to compare it to New York City’s well-known multi-use, green destination, Central Park. Among the enhancements are a new main station for the Hermann Park train, a pedal boat lagoon, a gift shop, and Little Bigs café, which are all part of the magnificently redesigned Lake Plaza, located adjacent to McGovern Lake and the Houston Zoo. Little Bigs will offer family-friendly fare upon opening later this summer. A new bridge, made possible by a $1 million grant from The Tiffany & Co. Foundation, connects Lake Plaza to the walkways leading to the Jones Reflection Pool, Miller Outdoor Theatre, and the Japanese Garden. All of these venues are easily reachable via an expanded miniature train route and new boarding stations along Hermann Park Railroad. A new station at the corner of N. MacGregor and Fannin allows patrons parking at the Memorial Hermann Medical Plaza Garage to easily access all Park attractions via a short walk or ride on the train. Additional new stations are located at Miller Outdoor Theatre (across from the Houston Museum of Natural Science) and across from Rice University’s main entrance (at Fannin and Sunset). As always, Hermann Park Conservancy and the Houston Parks and Recreation Department encourage visitors to come by METRORail, which has three stops convenient to Hermann Park. They include the Hermann Park/Rice University stop at Fannin and Sunset, the Memorial Hermann Hospital/Houston Zoo stop at N. MacGregor and Fannin, and the Museum District stop on Fannin and San Jacinto streets between Ewing and Binz. Please visit www.ridemetro.org for more information on riding METRORail.
