TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 2010 – Taking advantage of Houston’s trails and natural areas will soon be easier than ever for cyclists thanks to the addition of a bike bridge over Brays Bayou in Hermann Park. The Bill Coats Bike Bridge, scheduled to begin construction next week, will link the trail system along Brays Bayou to the trails in the heart of Hermann Park. An official groundbreaking ceremony for this exciting project will take place on Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at 10am in Hermann Park at 6530 ½ Almeda Road, Houston, TX 77021. “Hermann Park Conservancy is so pleased that this incredible amenity will be named in memory of Bill Coats, a civic leader and a founder of Hermann Park Conservancy and Trees for Houston,” said Doreen Stoller, executive director of Hermann Park Conservancy. “Once complete, the bridge will be an amazing enhancement for Hermann Park and for the City of Houston.” The Bill Coats Bike Bridge, scheduled to open to the public in early 2012, has been made possible thanks to a federal bikeways program, the Texas Department of Transportation, and the City of Houston. Construction of the new bike bridge is taking place in conjunction with a number of other improvements along Brays Bayou, including the widening of the bayou for increased flood control, and a pedestrian underpass to take walkers and cyclists under North and South MacGregor streets to the heart of Hermann Park.
